Whenever I need to refuel and recharge my creativity I find that an "Artist's Date", as penned by artist/author Julia Cameron in her best-selling book The Artists Way, is a great way to reconnect with the creative muse within. In The Artist's Way, Julia helps artist and creative people to reconnect with their muses and break out of the creative blocks that creative people suffer from time to time.
I've found that spending a few hours amongst the masters in the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA), or a trip to The Walker Museum, Minneapolis' stellar Museum of Contemporary Art, or a visit to the architecturally inspiring Gutherie Theatre, are all great Artist Dates. When the days are warm and wonderful in the Twin Cities a stroll through St. Anthony Main along the Mississippi River and over the Stone Arch Bridge into downtown is another Artist Date that I love to take.
Upon moving to the Twin Cities a few years ago I was introduced to the MIA by a friend of mine. I was blown away by the great collections that the Institute has to offer its guests. And I was equally impressed that this superb Art Museum is open to the public for free. Such a great gift for residents and visitors to the Twin Cities. I've visited most of the U.S.'s premier art museums and the MIA ranks in my Top 10.
One of the best parts of an Artist's Date at the MIA is that you don't have to go see the entire collection in one day. I plan my visits as one hour expeditions, starting out by relaxing having a cup of coffee in the hip and trendy Dogwood Coffee Co., located on the first floor of the MIA. From there I focus on an area of particular interest. On my last visit I was happy to have friends Shane and Cameron visit the MIA with me. Cameron is in his first year of a PhD. program at Northwestern in Chicago focusing on African Caribe Art History. So we devoted our visit to an hour exploring the African art collections that the MIA curates. It was a great Artists Date and both Cameron and Shane are a wealth of knowledge on art history and artistic insight.
Whenever you need a creative recharge treat yourself to an Artist's Date. Check out Julia Cameron's book The Artist Way if you're needing to unblock a creative block. Her best-selling book and lectures are great resources for all artists and creative people.
